After confronting a prominent attorney with his three young things at his side for not leaving a tip, Charles Goodwin, the cannibalistic owner of The Giggling Mongoose, becomes frustrated that he can't teach the old goat a lesson in restaurant manners. When the scorned wife makes him an offer he can't refuse, he makes a special Valentine's Day dinner that leaves their hearts bleeding.

This 5,530-word short story was first published in Behind Locked Doors anthology (Wicked East Press, March 2012).

Short Story - A Stockton Wedding Reception

My short story, "A Stockton Wedding Reception," is slated for publication in The Ultimate Writer (September 2013).

Paul and Miriam Kaufman met the old fashioned way in the mid-1950’s, arriving in separate cars with their dates for a wedding reception at a community hall outside of Stockton. As their dates fetches refreshments and don't return, they talk about why their dates conspired against church rules to see each other in the manure capital of California.

This particular short story was probably the last snail mail submission that I made two years ago before switching over exclusively to email submissions. Imagine my surprise when the editor recently contacted me by email to accept my short story for publication.

Except for one small problem: I had already rewritten and published the short story as an original ebook, "Let Me Be Your Spook."

Which meant the original short story was no longer available and the ebook version would be a reprint. After trading emails with the editor, and reading both short stories side-by-side, I decided to let the original short story be published after some minor editing. Having two very similar short stories with different slants is an interesting problem for a writer.

After being out of work for 18 months during the Great Recession, I attended the Apple Store job fair on a hot summer day in 2010. I didn’t think twice when the blue-shirted Apple Store employees insisted that I drank the cold bottles of water. After Mother Nature called and I took an unscheduled restroom break, I had inadvertently pissed away my job interview.

This original 8,300-word personal essay is an inside account of the Apple Store job fair at the Apple campus in Cupertino, CA, where experienced (older) workers are promise a job interview but get weeded out at different stages in favor of inexperienced (younger) workers who are more hip and relatable to sell Apple products to the unwashed masses.
